Snowfall in Gangtok — When You'll Actually See Snow

Gangtok is one of India's most-Googled snow destinations — and also one of the most misunderstood. Snow in Gangtok city itself is much rarer than people expect. But just 40 km away, Tsomgo Lake and Nathula get genuine deep snow. Here's exactly when, where and how to plan.

Does it actually snow in Gangtok city?

Gangtok sits at 1,650 m. Compared to Shimla or Manali, it is at a lower altitude — so snowfall inside the city is uncommon. On average, Gangtok sees light snow on 2-5 days per year, almost always between mid-December and mid-February.

If you want guaranteed snow, you have to drive higher. Tsomgo Lake (3,780 m) and Nathula Pass (4,310 m) are reliable snow zones in winter. North Sikkim — Lachung, Yumthang, Zero Point — gets the heaviest snow of all.

Best places to chase snow from Gangtok

  • Tsomgo Lake — 1.5 hour drive, frozen lake & snow from Dec to early Mar.
  • Nathula Pass — 2 hours, India-China border, permit-controlled and breathtaking when open.
  • Baba Mandir — combo with Tsomgo, often a snow-blanket experience.
  • Lachung & Yumthang Valley (North Sikkim) — 6-7 hour drive, the deepest snow in the state.
  • Zero Point (4,724 m) — accessible from Lachung; spectacular when open.

Winter travel tips from our local team

  • Layer up — thermals, fleece + a waterproof outer. Gloves and waterproof shoes are non-negotiable above 3,000 m.
  • Acclimatise — at least one full night in Gangtok before driving to Tsomgo / Nathula.
  • Carry chocolate, water and a small oxygen can if you've never been to high altitude.
  • Permits — Indian travelers need an inner-line permit for Tsomgo & Nathula; foreigners need RAP. We arrange both.
  • Always keep a buffer day in winter. Roads close suddenly — our team adapts your itinerary live.

Our drivers carry snow chains in winter and BRO maintains 4x4 access — but if a road closes for safety, we'll re-route you and keep budget impact zero.

If your dream is snow, plan for Tsomgo + Nathula in January-February or commit to North Sikkim. Don't bet your entire trip on snowfall in Gangtok city — message us and we'll build a circuit that maximises your snow chances within your dates.
